On June 23 & 24, 2012, the Battle of Gaines’ Mill Living History Weekend will take place at Gaines’ Mill Battlefield. From 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. both days, there’ll be demonstrations about everything from the use of balloons during the Civil War to life and activities in camp and on the battle field. And there’ll be NPS Ranger-led walking tours about civilians affected by the Civil War at the Watt House, calvary & artillery demonstrations, and more (full schedule).
Anniversary activities will take place from 10:00 a.m.-8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27. During the day, you can take NPS Ranger-led walking & hiking tours, or head out in the evening for the Special Commemorative Anniversary Program:
- 6:30 p.m.-7:15 p.m. (Program Tent): “Gaines’ Mill: An Overview of Lee’s First Victory” with former NPS Chief; In case of inclement weather, this program will take place at the VFW Hall, 7168 Flag Lane, Mechanicsville.
- Historian Ed Bearss
- 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. (Visitor Information Tent): “Texans Lead the Way: Lee’s Largest Attack of the Civil War Breaks the Union Left,” a walking tour with NPS Historian Robert E.L. Krick
- 8:45 p.m.: Taps Over the Battlefield
Gaines’ Mill Battlefield is located at 6238 Watt House Rd., Mechanicsville; parking is available at Cold Harbor Visitor Center, 5515 Anderson-Wright Dr., Mechanicsville. Shuttles will run from visitor parking areas to the park from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 23, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on June 24, and from 2:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on June 27.
