What’s It About?
Ayida is a group exhibit of five early- to mid-career artists celebrating the Caribbean and its people through art. The works on display primarily pay homage to the cultures of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, among other Caribbean and African-influenced cultures.
The exhibit is named after Ayida-Weddo, a “loa’ or diety, often portrayed as a rainbow-colored serpent that presides over rainbows as well as the elements of wind, water and fire.
These themes are evident in many of the contributing artists’ works.
Who’s Art Is Being Displayed?
The exhibit is curated by guest curator Serubiri Moses and features works by artists Lizania Cruz, Oletha DeVane, Thomas Allen Harris, Mujero, and Didier William.
Ayida is going on now through Feb. 22nd, 2026, at the Institute for Contemporary Art at The Markel Center, 601 W. Broad St. in Richmond. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Sunday. Closed on Mondays.
