2013 cheersFriday Cheers remains one of my favorite music series in the RVA. Not only does it feature a good mix of bands, but it’s cheap: Tickets are $5-$10 each, depending on the show, and kids under age 12 are admitted free.

Here’s the lineup for Friday Cheers 2013:

  • May 24: RVA Music Night with NO BS! Brass Band, Murphy’s Kids and Former Champions; $5
  • May 31: Head and the Heart and Black Girls; $10
  • June 7: Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires; $10
  • June 14: Kishi Bashi and Lake Street Dive; $5 // FYI–Kishi Bashi is amazing to see perform live, and $5 is ridiculously cheap for the experience. IMO, it’s the don’t-miss concert of the season.
  • June 21: Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and The Pimps of Joytime; $10
  • June 28: Infamous Stringdusters and James Justin & Co.; $10

Gates open at 6:00 p.m., and the opener should start playing at around 6:30 p.m. You can order tickets online or buy them at one of the three entry points to Brown’s Island. Payment is taken at all locations, but debit and credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are only accepted at two entry points: The pedestrian bridge at 5th and 7th Streets.

poe unhappy hour may 2013I’d love to make it out to this on Thursday night:

On May 23, 2013, The Poe Museum will host its May Unhappy Hour: “Annabel Lee,”, a tale of “a love that was more than love.”

From 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m., you can celebrate Poe’s 177th wedding anniversary a week late with live music by Technicians; Poe performances by Amber Boice; a book signing with Jeffrey Abugel, author of a book about Poe’s honeymoon in Petersburg (he owns the house where Poe honeymooned, too); & more.

The family-friendly event is free (though there is a suggested donation of $5), and there’ll be free food plus a cash bar for those inclined.

Unhappy Hour takes place rain or shine; the garden will be tented to keep you dry.

1914-16 East Main Street, Richmond. 804-648-5523
