Free Yoga at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

saturday salutations 2013If you missed out on Saturday Salutations at VMFA last summer, you’ve got quite a few chances to take a free yoga class in the coming months.

Project Yoga Richmond is once again partnering with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to offer free yoga classes. Bring your mat (and a hoop, if necessary), a towel, and some water, and head to VMFA for a free practice.

Be sure to arrive by 15 minutes early so that you have time to sign in & get situated before the practice begins. Since the yoga classes take place outside on VMFA’s Belvedere deck atop the Sculpture Garden, sunscreen is advised, and the event will be canceled if it rains.

Saturdays, Class from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

  • May 25
  • June 8
  • June 22

Fridays, Class from 6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.

  • July 5
  • July 19
  • August 9
  • August 23

Saturdays, Class from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m

  • September 14
  • September 28 (hooping)
  • October 12

Virginia Museum of Fine Arts: Free Jazz Café Concert with Charles Owens on Thursday, May 23, 2013

In the mood for a free jazz concert in Richmond?

From 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. on Thursday nights, you can stop by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts for a free concert as part of its Jazz Café concert series, held in Best Café, and there are free tours of VMFA, too.

Here’s the Jazz Café lineup for this week & next:

  • May 23: Charles Owens
  • May 30: Quintessential Jazz

Admission to VMFA’s permanent collection galleries & Jazz Café is free, but unless you’re a member of VMFA or active-duty military, you’ll need to buy a ticket to see the special exhibition, Pop Art and Beyond: Tom Wesselmann. Tickets are $15 for adults & $10 for youth (7-17) & students with ID, and $12 for seniors 65+ & adult groups of 10+. Since the exhibition contains some graphic content, parental discretion is advised.

If you can’t snag a spot on Sheppard St, parking in the garage is free for members & $5/day for nonmembers. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is located at 200 N. Boulevard, Richmond. 804-340-1400

strawberry fields festival 2013It’s May, and I have not yet indulged in this season’s strawberries. I should change that this weekend:

On Saturday, May 25, 2013, the Strawberry Fields Festival will take place at The Berry Patch at Gallmeyer Farms. From 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., you can browse the Artists Market, take advantage of hay rides & pony rides, and (of course) pick your own berries. Plus, there’ll be live music by Nick Smith, Southern Comfort, Amy Ladd & Friends, Heart of Country, and Amaris & Shiloh.

It’s free to attend the Strawberry Fields Festival, but be prepared to spend a bit–With fresh vegetables & local strawberries for sale, it’s a good time to stock up. The Berry Patch at Gallmeyer Farms is located at 3622 Darbytown Court, Henrico. 804-795-9979.

henrico pops chorusOn Tuesday, May 21, 2013, head to The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen for a free Henrico Pops Chorus: Fantasies on Broadway concert at 7:30 p.m.

Under the direction of Bobbie Moore, the Henrico Pops Chorus will explore seven musical anthologies that have been created out of the dreams, fantasies, and even nightmares of their authors. The program includes selections from Beauty and the Beast, The Wizard of Oz, Into the Woods, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Little Shop of Horrors, Jekyll and Hyde, & Cats.

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is located at 2880 Mountain Road, Glen Allen. Admission is free for the Henrico Pops Chorus: Fantasies on Broadway concert, but reservations are required. Call 804-501-5859 to RSVP.

I love live music, and I’ll take it anywhere I can get it–parks, festivals, even while shopping.

If you want to shop to a different beat each week, head to Stony Point Fashion Park for free Summer Sounds concerts. Starting May 25, 2013, each Thursday-Sunday (+ Memorial Day & Labor Day) through September 2 features a new mix of performers.

Here’s the lineup for Memorial Day weekend:

  • Saturday, May 25, from 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.: Kings of Swing (Swing, 70’s, Oldies and Rock)
  • Sunday, May 26, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m.: TFC Band (Motown, Oldies, Soul, Top 40)
