Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite!
St. John’s Church, 2401 EAST BROAD STREET, is pleased to welcome the Marquis de Lafayette in honor of Bastille Day (July 14th, 1789). Come meet this historical figure who factored so prominently in American History on Sunday, July 12th at 2:45 p.m.
According to the St. John’s Church Foundation, as both a “friend and a father,” George Washington held the younger Lafayette in high esteem. The Frenchman remained at Washington’s side during the harsh winter at Valley Forge in 1777 and was later sent south to capture suspected traitor Benedict Arnold. Lafayette also helped capture General Cornwallis at Yorktown, Va. in 1781.
Working for Free
Congress, in the early stages of government, could not pay the young officer and turned down his services. Lafayette would not be turned away and agreed to serve without pay. Congress awarded Lafayette the rank of major general to serve at General Washington’s side. This strengthened the bond between them and soon Washington referred to Lafayette as his adopted son. (In 1779, The marquis named his newly born son Georges Washington de Lafayette in honor of the American revolutionary.)
Come see the Marquis de Lafayette live, in person. Tickets are only $12 for adults and teens 16 and older, $10 for children ages 7 to 15, and FREE for kids 6 and younger.
